Spring is my favorite season, The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and the humidity isn’t too stifling yet! It’s the perfect time to sit outside and enjoy my backyard.
While it’s nothing fancy and definitely not professionally landscaped, I’ve worked hard to create a wonderful sanctuary. I can spend hours relaxing and relieving any self-imposed stress. Professionals call my style of landscaping xeriscape. It’s a design that requires little to no maintenance or irrigation. Xeriscaping is low maintenance and conserves water. Plus with all the rain we see during summer, there really is no need to waste water or money on extensive irrigation systems!
I’ve seen success with a variety of plants. Here are some of my plant recommendations (as well as a few pictures of my own backyard!) for Central Florida landscaping:
Tabebuia Tree
These trees sprout beautiful yellow, pink, or lavender blossoms and signify to everyone that spring has definitely sprung. Trimming isn’t necessary and they are perfect for shade, boundary lining, or landscaping accents.
Orchid tree
This fast-growing tree boasts orchid-like blossoms with pink, purple, and lavender varieties. Unlike the short life of the Tabebuia blossom, Orchid trees can bloom until early summer.
Avocado tree
A fun project that involves eating an avocado (or two) in advance, you can easily grow an avocado tree from a seed. They love the Floridian tropical climate and, once mature, provide a delicious snack for your family!
Bougainvillea
A popular tropical vine, these plants add a great pop of color to any backyard. They grow really fast and can be trained into a variety of shapes.
In addition to these spring-evoking plants, I also grow:
Orchid Cactus
Orchid
While landscaping may seem daunting at first, with a little research and a bit of trial and error, you too can enjoy a lush backyard.
